White House directs staff to wear masks after officials contract coronavirus

U.S. President Donald Trump, one of the only people in the White House Rose Garden not wearing a mask.

On Monday hailed America’s testing capability but abruptly ended his news conference when grilled over why testing is a ‘competition’ when people are still dying.

What led to the White House’s decision to require all staff members to wear masks?

In light of recent events, the White House has issued a directive that all staff members are now required to wear masks. This comes after several officials within the White House have contracted the coronavirus over the past few weeks.

The directive was announced by White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany during a press briefing on May 11th. She stressed the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all individuals working within the White House.

The decision to implement this directive comes after two White House staff members, including a personal valet to President Trump, tested positive for the virus in early May. Additionally, several members of Vice President Mike Pence’s team have also tested positive in recent days.

This move towards mandatory mask-wearing is in stark contrast to the White House’s previous stance on the matter. President Trump, himself, publicly stated that he would not be wearing a mask and mocked those who chose to do so.

However, with the virus now hitting so close to home, it seems that the White House has had to rethink its position on this issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have long recommended the use of masks in order to slow the spread of the virus. Many states across the US have also enacted laws mandating the use of masks in public settings.

The White House’s decision to now require masks for all staff members is a step in the right direction towards slowing the spread of the virus. It is worth noting, however, that this directive only applies to staff members and not to the President or Vice President, who will continue to make their own decisions about mask-wearing.

With the pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, it is crucial that everyone does their part to stay safe and healthy. Wearing a mask in public settings is just one small action that can have a big impact on keeping ourselves and others healthy. The White House’s directive to require masks is a welcome move in this fight against the coronavirus.
