Boston College student appears before judge.

Former Boston College student returned from South Korea to face charges in her boyfriend’s death.

What was the alleged sexual assault that the Boston College student appeared before the judge for?

On October 28th, 2021, a Boston College student appeared before a judge in Massachusetts, with dramatic text messages being read aloud in court. The case revolves around an alleged sexual assault that occurred in September 2020.

The accused, Inyoung You, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her boyfriend, Alexander Urtula. Urtula took his own life by jumping off the roof of a Boston parking garage, following what prosecutors describe as a pattern of emotional and psychological abuse by You.

The prosecutor read aloud a series of text messages exchanged between You and Urtula, dating back to May 2019. The messages depicted an abusive and controlling relationship, with You repeatedly threatening Urtula, both verbally and through text messages.

The messages showed You had threatened to kill Urtula on multiple occasions, told him she wished he were dead, and called him derogatory names. She also isolated him from his friends and family, monitored his every move through his phone, and controlled his daily activities.

The text messages revealed a pattern of severe emotional abuse, with You frequently threatening to harm Urtula if he didn’t do as she asked. The messages revealed that Urtula was struggling with depression and anxiety, which You used to manipulate and control him.

Urtula’s health deteriorated rapidly under You’s emotional abuse, and he ultimately took his own life on May 20th, 2019. The prosecutor argued in court that You’s actions directly caused Urtula’s death, and that she should be held accountable for involuntary manslaughter.

The defense, however, maintains that You cannot be held responsible for Urtula’s death. They argue that Urtula had a history of mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, and that he was not solely influenced by You’s abusive behavior.

Regardless of the outcome of the case, the dramatic text messages read aloud in court highlight the destructive nature of emotional abuse and the devastating consequences it can have. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing abusive behavior, and taking action to prevent further harm.
