The numbers behind Delta are what pushed this from a local contact-tracing story into a national concern. Estimates circulating by early June put the variant at roughly 40% to 50% more transmissible than Alpha, the strain that had already outcompeted the original virus lineage across much of the world. That kind of transmissibility edge is how a variant becomes dominant globally in a matter of months, which is exactly the trajectory Delta was on.
Vaccine data added urgency to the picture.
