The Johns Hopkins Hospital just got told, on the record, that it’s one of the three best hospitals in the country — and its president wanted the staff to hear that straight from her.

On July 30, 2019, U.S. News & World Report released its 2019–20 Best Hospitals rankings, and The Johns Hopkins Hospital landed at No. 3 nationally out of more than 4,600 facilities evaluated, trailing only Mayo Clinic at No. 1 and Massachusetts General Hospital at No. 2. The National Rankings Breakdown

A Message From the President’s Office

Rather than issue a written statement, Johns Hopkins Medicine built its response around Miller speaking directly to staff on camera. She framed the No. 3 finish as a collective outcome built by clinicians, support staff and operations teams working in tandem rather than any single department’s doing.

Specialty-by-Specialty Strength

The headline No. 3 ranking sat on top of strong specialty-level results. Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Rheumatology each ranked No. 1 in the country. Nephrology and Urology both came in at No. 2, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry each landed at No. 3, and Cancer finished No. 4. In total, Johns Hopkins placed in the top 10 nationally in 12 separate specialties — the kind of depth across disciplines that U.S. News weighs heavily when compiling its Honor Roll.

Sibley and Suburban Add Regional Honors

The recognition extended beyond the flagship Baltimore campus. Sibley Memorial Hospital ranked No. 8 in the Washington, D.C., region, and Suburban Hospital came in at No. 10 in Maryland, giving the broader Johns Hopkins Medicine system multiple entries on the regional lists released alongside the national rankings.

Miller’s video runs only a few minutes, but it’s built to be watched by the people who actually earned the ranking — nurses, techs and physicians who show up on units that never get named in a press release. That’s the point of pairing her remarks with staff testimonials instead of just posting the No. 3 number and moving on.
