Rivera’s purse and identification were sitting in the boat along with a second life jacket that had never been put on.

According to a sheriff’s office statement drawn from the boy’s account, he and his mother had gone into the water to swim, and she pushed him back up into the boat from behind before she went under. That detail became the basis for investigators’ working theory almost immediately: that Rivera used whatever energy she had left getting her son to safety before she couldn’t get herself back in.

Five Days of Diving Through Poor Visibility

The search that followed involved dive teams, helicopters, drones and all-terrain vehicles combing a lake described by rescuers as thick with underwater brush and murky enough to limit visibility to almost nothing. Lake Piru, roughly an hour’s drive from Los Angeles in the Los Padres National Forest, is not a small pond — divers had to work grid patterns across a body of water where sonar was needed just to map what was below the surface.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office had said the day after Rivera vanished that they believed she had drowned, a conclusion that shaped where crews concentrated their search over the following days without changing what remained, at that point, an active recovery operation rather than a confirmed outcome.

The Sheriff’s Confirmation

At the July 13 press conference, Ayub laid out why investigators were confident in what they’d found even before lab work was complete.

“We are confident the body we found is that of Naya Rivera.”

Ayub cited physical traits consistent with Rivera, the clothing on the body, the spot where it surfaced in relation to where the boat had been recovered, and the fact that no other missing-persons reports matched. Formal identification, he said, would still require dental records and an autopsy through the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A Cast Already Marked by Loss

Rivera spent six seasons on “Glee” as Santana Lopez, one of the show’s most popular characters, and had at one point dated co-star Mark Salling, who died by suicide in 2018 at age 35 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. News of the search had already drawn heavy attention across entertainment coverage, including earlier reporting on Rivera’s disappearance at the lake, and the story had been treated as one of the summer’s biggest breaking news developments well before Monday’s discovery.

Rivera’s son remained with family members throughout the search, described by authorities as safe and healthy. She and the boy’s father, actor Ryan Dorsey, had finalized their divorce in June 2018 after nearly four years of marriage.

What’s left is procedural: the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office still has to run dental records and complete an autopsy before the sheriff’s department can move from “confident” to officially confirmed. Ayub didn’t give a timeline for when that would happen, only that the case would be handled through the standard identification process now that the search itself is over.
