Sanders and Warren slammed over “fairy tale” proposals in 2020 debate

Democrats clashed during Tuesday night’s debate in Detroit, as progressive Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren defended their policies from more moderate opponents.

CBS News political contributor Ed O’Keefe reports from Detroit while CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett and CBSN political contributor Molly Hooper join CBSN to break down the highlights.

What is the Green New Deal proposed by Sanders and Warren, and why do some experts argue that achieving its goals is not possible within the proposed timeframe?

In the most recent Democratic primary debate, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren came under fire from their fellow candidates for what many perceive as “fairy tale” proposals. Both candidates have made it clear that they have lofty goals for the country, but their opponents argue that their ideas are unrealistic and will never come to fruition.

One of the key proposals that Sanders and Warren have put forward is a Medicare for All plan. Under this plan, all Americans would be covered by a government-run health insurance program that would be paid for by increased taxes on the wealthy. While this idea may be popular with many voters, critics argue that it is simply not feasible. The cost of implementing such a program has been estimated to be in the trillions of dollars, and it would require a significant increase in taxes on the middle class.

Another proposal that has come under fire is the Green New Deal. This ambitious plan aims to transition the country to 100 percent renewable energy within the next few decades, while also creating millions of new jobs in the process. While the goal of reducing carbon emissions is commendable, many experts argue that achieving this kind of transformation is simply not possible within the proposed timeframe.

During the debate, some of Sanders and Warren’s opponents suggested that their proposals were simply unrealistic and that they were offering voters nothing more than “fairy tales.” Others criticized the senators for not providing concrete plans for how to pay for their proposals, arguing that the American people deserve to know the true cost of these initiatives.

While it is certainly tempting to dismiss these proposals as unrealistic, it is worth considering that Sanders and Warren are not the only candidates who have proposed ambitious ideas for the country. Other Democrats, such as Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris, have also put forward plans that could be considered equally ambitious. What sets Sanders and Warren apart is their unwavering commitment to these proposals, even in the face of criticism.

Whether or not Sanders and Warren’s ideas are realistic remains to be seen. However, it is clear that they have sparked a much-needed debate about the future of the country and what kind of society we want to live in. As the primary season unfolds, Americans will have to decide for themselves whether they are willing to embrace these “fairy tale” proposals, or if they prefer a more moderate approach to the challenges facing the country today.
