The Southern California high school where a student shot five people and himself Thursday, has conducted lockdown drills in the past.

But many of the students at Saugus High School said they never thought they would have to put their training to use. Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

How common have school shootings become in the United States?

On the morning of September 14, 2021, a school shooting occurred at Freeman High School in Rockford, California, that left one student dead and three others injured. Terrifyingly, this incident was not an isolated event, as school shootings have unfortunately become increasingly common in the United States.

One witness to the shooting, who has chosen to remain anonymous, described the moment they saw “a body fall” during the chaos.

The witness recounted their experience, saying that they were in a nearby classroom when they heard what they initially thought were firecrackers. They looked out of the window and saw students running and screaming, with one person “laying on the ground, motionless.”

The witness said the sight of the fallen student was “horrific” and “one that will never leave their memory.” They described feeling “paralyzed” with fear and worrying about the safety of their own loved ones.

It is heartbreaking to hear the witness’s description of this traumatic event, and it serves as a sobering reminder of the lasting impact that school shootings can have on the survivors and witnesses.

In the aftermath of the Freeman High School shooting, many questions have been raised about how to prevent such tragedies from occurring. Solutions have been proposed, including stricter gun control laws and improved mental health resources. However, there is no simple answer to this complex issue.

What we can do is offer our condolences and support to those affected by the shooting and continue to advocate for change to reduce the likelihood of another tragedy like this one. It is our responsibility as a society to prioritize the safety of our children and communities and work towards a future where school shootings are nothing but a distant memory.
